Today (July 12th) is National Low Carbon Day, and the theme of this year's Low Carbon Day is "actively addressing climate change and promoting green and low-carbon development". The reporter learned from the National Center for Climate Change Strategy Research and International Cooperation that China has achieved positive results in addressing climate change in the past decade, and a policy and action guarantee system for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality has been basically formed.

Over the past decade, China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP have decreased by 36.7%

According to preliminary calculations, in 2022, China's carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP decreased by 36.7% compared to 2012, and the proportion of non fossil energy consumption reached 17.5%, an increase of 7.8 percentage points compared to 2012. While the intensity of carbon emissions has decreased, forest coverage has also significantly improved. At present, the national forest coverage rate has reached 24.02%, and the forest storage volume is 19.493 billion cubic meters, exceeding the 2025 target. These visible changes cannot be separated from the gradual improvement of the top-level design.

Xu Huaqing, Director of the National Center for Climate Change Strategy Research and International Cooperation: Over the past decade, we have issued the "National Climate Change Plan (2014-2020)", "13th Five Year Plan for Controlling Greenhouse Gas Emissions", and "National Climate Change Strategy 2035". We have also issued the "Action Plan for Carbon Peaking before 2030", which should be said to have basically formed a package of policies, actions, and guarantee systems for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Experts introduce that currently, China's six major fields of energy, industry, urban-rural construction, transportation, agriculture and rural areas, pollution reduction and carbon reduction, as well as the four major industries of steel, non-ferrous metals, petrochemical and chemical engineering, and building materials, have basically formed carbon peak implementation plans; In addition, safeguard measures in areas such as green consumption, finance, finance, and technology are gradually being improved.

Double breakthroughs in renewable energy scale and technology

To promote the achievement of carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, China is vigorously developing renewable energy. In recent years, China has made significant progress in the field of major renewable energy projects, with the proportion of renewable energy continuously increasing, laying a solid foundation for the improvement of China's energy structure.

On the sea surface of Pingtan, Fujian, the world's first 16 megawatt offshore wind turbine is undergoing final debugging work before grid connection for power generation. After completion and operation, the wind turbine can generate 34.2 kilowatt hours of electricity by rotating one revolution, which is equivalent to the 7-day usage of a family of three, and will become the largest offshore wind turbine unit with single unit capacity that has been put into operation in the world. In the Kubuqi Desert, the construction of the world's largest scenic base is accelerating. Hundreds of large-scale construction machinery complete 200 acres of sand dune leveling every day. According to the plan, the first phase of 1 million kilowatt photovoltaic power generation project will achieve grid connected power generation before the end of this year.

The reporter learned that in recent years, renewable energy represented by wind power, photovoltaic power, and hydropower in China has developed rapidly. As of the end of April this year, the total installed capacity of wind and photovoltaic power generation in China has exceeded 800 million kilowatts, accounting for 30.9% of the national installed capacity. All 16 units of the Baihetan Hydropower Station have been put into operation, generating over 100 million kWh per day. The six giant cascade hydropower stations on the main stream of the Yangtze River have also formed the world's largest "clean energy corridor". Leapfrog development of clean energy
